Ceramide is a natural component of human skin. It links the outer skin together to form a water proof protective barrier. The design of the outer skin can be described as a "bricks and mortar" pattern. The cells represent the bricks and ceramide represent the mortar. Both are required to have healthy functioning skin. The cells linked together with ceramide will create a protective barrier which will help the peristomal skin remain hydrated and protect it from external elements such as contact with stool/urine/bacteria and frequent barrier removal.
Ceramides help prevent water loss from your skin which can lead to skin damage and dryness. This damage can be amplified with skin stripping, which may occur when you remove and apply barriers to your skin. Many skin moisturising products contain ceramide as a component to help protect the skin against loss of its natural moisture.
