The importance of peristomal skin health in ostomy care can’t be overstated.
Peristomal skin is the immediate skin surrounding your stoma – the skin which your barrier adheres to. It is important that this skin is kept as
healthy as possible to ensure that your barriers adhere properly to the skin. This in turn will support the best possible environment to minimise
leaks and to minimise disruption to your life.
Unfortunately, peristomal skin problems are too common.
People with an ostomy even think that skin problems are a normal part of living with a stoma. We disagree. Your skin around your stoma should be the same as the skin on the opposite side of your stomach and our goal is to help maintain healthy peristomal skin from the start.
Ceramide is a natural component of human skin, consisting of waxy lipid molecules. Ceramide links cells of the outer skin (epidermis) together to form a waterproof, protective barrier.
Like mortar in a brick wall - ceramides are the mortar andyour skin cells are the bricks. Ceramides help prevent water loss from your skin which can lead to skin damage and dryness. This damage can be amplified with the skin stripping (which occurs when you remove and apply barriers to your skin). Many skin moisturizing products contain ceramide as a component to help protect the skin against loss of its natural moisture.
